Race into the New Year with a 5K

Written by: Shannon Polk, Kudos Team Contributor

A new year means more opportunities to accomplish your goals and create lasting memories. So why not sign up for a 5K to kick off your fitness plan and support a local organization? Cities around the country will hold 5Ks on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in support of resolutions to stay active and give back to the community. Whether you walk, trot, run or race, you will come away knowing you entered the new year on a positive note! Consider signing up for one of our recommended picks below or search runningtheusa.com for a local race near you!

1. Resolution Run | Atlanta, GA
Kicking off on New Year’s Day, this Atlantic Track Club race encourages the whole family to participate with a 5K, One Mile or 50m Dash. Plus, the 5K doesn’t start until 10:30 a.m., allowing you to sleep in after a night of ringing in the new year. The location of the race is easily accessible, starting and ending in Piedmont Park.

2. New Year’s Eve 5K | Chicago, IL
If you’re planning to party in Chicago on New Year’s Eve, you will likely consume more calories than your average evening at home. The good news is that you can get ahead of the game with a 5K the morning before your night out. This particular 5K loops around Chicago’s scenic Lincoln Park and Lakefront Trail, and there’s nothing like an invigorating, cold-weather run to jump start the new year. Plus, the race benefits Special Olympics Chicago.

3. Resolution 5K | Denver, CO
In its 35th year, the Resolution 5k has become a well-known New Year’s Eve tradition in Denver. The race is held in Washington Park and includes a post-race party with refreshments and prize drawings. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Volunteers of America – Colorado Branch, which is committed to helping those in need.

4. Commitment Day 5K | Houston, TX
This race is one of 35 outdoor Commitment Day 5Ks around the country on New Year’s Day. Don’t want to run outside? Sign up for an indoor 5K at your local Life Time facility. You don’t have to be a member to participate. The official charity partner is Life Time Foundation, which provides grants that allow schools to provide healthier meals to students.

5. NYRR Midnight Run | New York, NY
If the crowded scene of Times Square isn’t for you, consider doing something different and signing up for NYRR’s four-mile race. We know, it’s not a 5K, but it’s just .9 miles more and we’re sure you can do it! The race starts at midnight in Central Park, where you’ll see fireworks lighting up the sky to celebrate the new year.

Whether you run or dance your way into the new year, have fun and stay safe! Good luck with your resolutions and kudos to you for challenging yourself!
